School governance is the most important volunteering role in education. However at any one time there are approximately 40,000 governor vacancies across England. There are currently a number of governor vacancies in Hertfordshire.

Being a school governor is the most important voluntary role in education. Governors from a professional background are invaluable to the day-to-day running of a school, as they have many of the skills and the knowledge required to carry out important and necessary tasks such as, managing budgets, appointing senior staff and planning the school’s long term future.

School Governance is a mutually beneficial process, enabling the individual volunteer to strengthen existing skills and develop new ones. Hertfordshire County Council provide opportunities for all school governors to attend training courses and conferences to further develop the skills and knowledge required to be effective in their roles.

School Governor volunteering is open to everyone over the age of 18 who has an average of 8 hours a month to spare (mainly in the evenings and during term time only) and who wants to make a positive difference in the community. You do not need to be a parent to apply.

School Governors’ One-Stop Shop (SGOSS) is a charity which recruits school governors to fill vacancies on governing bodies in schools across England. All SGOSS services are free to Local Authorities, schools, businesses and individual volunteers. SGOSS are working with Hertfordshire County Council to help find volunteers to fill their vacancies. Interested individuals and businesses seeking to build stronger links within the community and develop their CSR scheme can contact SGOSS for more information on Tel: 020 7354 9805 Email: or visit the website
