There are now less than two months to go until the start of this year’s Herts 10K in Harpenden. On 11 October 2015 up to 3,000 runners will set off from Rothamsted Research in aid of Rennie Grove Hospice Care.

Founded in 2006, this year marks the event’s 10th anniversary and it’s still going strong. After the explosion in all things sport due to the 2012 London Olympics the run sold out for the first time and is now the largest event of its kind in the county. An estimated 20,000 people have taken part since the inaugural race 10 years ago and many now make it a yearly feature on their running calendar.

All money raised by the Herts 10K goes towards Rennie Grove Hospice Care, a local charity supporting patients diagnosed with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. The run has so far raised over £1 million and this year the charity is hoping to raise the money to pay for five specialist nurses for a year.

Though the current course record for the Herts 10K was set in 2010 at 32:56 the event is open to absolutely everyone whether they prefer to run or walk. Spectators line the scenic route, which is a mixture of cross-country and roadway, to cheer on the participants as they take part at the pace that suits them. Anyone 12 years or older can sign up; in the past the event has seen runners in their 80s taking part!

St. Albans runner Melanie Wall says, "I have now run the Herts 10K three times. Rain or shine the course is fantastic but, more than that, I love the camaraderie. Yes, we're all trying to better our time but it's a team effort and I remember one year a fellow runner told me to keep going when I had momentarily stopped on the last exhausting bend. Also, I always run the race with my step-dad - it's our thing! I can't wait until October!”

Everyone who takes part, whether they’re aiming for the winner’s trophy or simply enjoying the atmosphere on the day, will be given a technical running t-shirt and presented with a medal once across the finish line.
