Commenting on the Home Affairs Select Committee Report on the immigration cap published today (Wednesday), David Frost, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) said:
“The Select Committee is completely right – it is totally illogical that professional sportspeople are exempted from the cap but elite scientists* and others who make a strong contribution to the economy are not.
"New restrictions on immigration must not undermine the ability of UK businesses to recruit the best and the brightest, which allows UK plc to compete internationally.
"While employers must work with the Government to train the domestic workforce, arbitrary restrictions on the number of talented non-EU nationals will not help increase jobs for UK workers.
“The Government needs to think again - and create a balanced migration policy that limits the number of low-skilled migrants, while allowing us to entice top global talent to the UK.”
