12March: EE today announced it has switched on 5G in 21 new towns and cities across the UK - including Cheshunt and Waltham Cross.
The two towns are among the first places to receive the next generation mobile technology on EE’s network, following the first sites going live in Hertfordshire last year. EE has now brought the best mobile experience to a total of 71 locations, and 5G to more places in the UK than any other operator.
Today, EE has added 5G to Cheshunt and Waltham Cross as well as Birkenhead, Clydebank, Motherwell and Rotherham and switched on its first 5G sites in Bath, Bransholme, Bury, Clevedon, Dinnington, Loughborough, North Shields, Rugeley, Swadlincote, South Shields, and Staines.
The company, part of BT Group, was the first operator to launch 5G coverage in the UK in May 2019 and has been expanding its network daily. As well as switching on the first 5G sites in new cities and large towns, EE has also brought 5G to more high footfall places, including Bath’s Royal Crescent and Pulteney Bridge, London Bridge and London’s Thornton Heath railway station.
Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s consumer division, said:“We have 5G coverage in more places than any other operator, and remain focused on connecting even more towns and cities in 2020 and beyond to keep our customers connected in the busiest places.”
Jane Thomas, BT Group regional lead for the East of England, said: “EE has rolled out 5G to more of Hertfordshire, meaning even more people and businesses in the area can benefit from the latest mobile technology.
“As well as providing faster speeds and more capacity, the future potential for 5G is incredible.”
Briege Leahy, from the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “It’s great news that more people and businesses in Hertfordshire are now able to benefit from 5G.
“This investment from EE means they have now connected six towns across the county to the latest mobile network technology and the expanding infrastructure this will provide could unleash a huge amount of business potential in the area. Not only is it fantastic for consumers who will be able to get faster speeds but it could also help companies to grow, and, in the not too distant future, it may help usher in the launch of new businesses and industries we haven’t really thought about yet.”
According to independent 5G testing by RootMetrics, EE’s 5G network achieved the highest average download speed and highest 5G availability in London, Birmingham and Cardiff.
EE customers with a 5G device on a 5G plan can enjoy 5G in the following cities and large towns today:
