Olympian Tim Baillie MBE is helping to celebrate National Go Canoeing Week at Lee Valley White Water Centre from Saturday 28 May - Sunday 5 June, with a host of activities, including canoeing taster sessions for families.
There is also a competition on Thursday 2 June, open to all canoeists taking part in the taster, and run by Lee Valley White Water Centre at Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, with a prize for the winner. Special guest Tim, who won gold at the London 2012 Canoe Slalom event, will present a prize to the winner at the end of the day.
The hour long taster sessions will run throughout the week for families for just £5 per person, on the centre’s crystal clear lake and are open to children aged eight and over.
Go Canoeing, the Olympic inspired British Canoeing initiative, is aiming to get everyone out on the water having fun for National Go Canoeing Week and is hosting canoeing and kayaking activities across the country, while focusing on a number of key events for the week at Lee Valley.
Lee Valley White Water Centre is British Canoeing’s High Performance Centre and is the base for the British Canoe Slalom squad and all UK Sport funded Podium athletes. The centre is the first London 2012 legacy venue to gain this High Performance Centre status and currently the Slalom Squad’s team GB are training at the Centre for this summer’s Olympics in Rio.
Paskell Blackwell, Lee Valley White Water Centre’s General Manager said: “We are delighted to help celebrate Go Canoeing Week here at Lee Valley White Water Centre, especially as we’ll soon be cheering on the GB Canoe Slalom team as they go for gold in Rio. This week is a great opportunity for everyone to get paddling, whether experienced or just beginners, and to give this great sport a try!
“And it’s also a chance for people to have a go at all the other exciting white water activities available at the centre, including rafting and Go Sup stand up paddle boarding for those as young as eight, along with our weekend activities such as Hydrospeeding, which is similar to bodyboarding but on fast flowing white water and Hot Dog sessions in our two person inflatables.”
