Protecting and Enforcing your Intellectual Property

Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Longmores Solicitors, invite you to this breakfast seminar on the subject of Intellectual Property, the last in a series of three events on this subject.

Having the right type of Intellectual Property protection helps you to stop people stealing or copying:
  • The names of your products or brands
  • Your inventions
  • The design or look of your products
  • Things you write, make or produce

Copyright, patents, designs and trade marks are all types of Intellectual Property (IP) protection which has fast become recognised as a vital part of business. However, it is not always enough for businesses to have IP protection. In order to make the most of their intellectual assets, businesses will occasionally need to take action to enforce their rights. In this session, Rina Sond LLB LDip and John Wiblin of Longmores Solicitors will be covering how IP can be protected and enforced, including:

  • The new copyright regime - what is protected and what is not
  • Database rights – what is a database
  • Passing off and Trademark infringement
  • Remedies for infringement
  • Settlement and Co-existence Agreements

John Wiblin is a partner in Longmores and heads its Dispute Resolution team. Amongst other advanced qualifications, John holds a masters degree in UK, EC and US Copyright Law from King’s College, London. He acts regularly for copyright owners and trademark proprietors in enforcing their rights. And on occasion he also acts for the alleged infringers.

Typical recent cases have involved acting for an online retailer of automotive parts who alleged that their substantial website catalogue of carefully written parts descriptions had been copied by a competitor; acting for the lead singer of a successful 1960s pop group in a dispute over the rights to the band’s name; and acting for a manufacturer of luxury car detailing products against sellers of similar but inferior products being passed off as that of John’s client.

John is an arbitrator, a mediator and is also admitted to practise law in California, USA and South Africa.  He is recognised as a leader in his field by the 2019 Chambers and Partners guide.

Rina Sond is a Company Commercial Partner and heads the Commercial and IP team at Longmores Solicitors. She has over 18 years’ experience in dealing with a variety of commercial contracts, intellectual property and brand protection issues.

Rina also has specialist experience in assisting her clients with protecting, managing and exploiting their IP assets to their full commercial advantagethrough licensing, university spin-outs and other arrangements. She has acted for a wide range of clients from various industry sectors, including retail, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, IT and service industries.

Rina is an Allied Member of the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys, and is a recognised lawyer in the Legal 500 directory.
