From this week, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is sending out a new look tax return which has been designed to make it easier for self assessment taxpayers to understand, particularly those who are self-employed.  It has fewer questions, simpler language and an improved layout.

The return includes a new page for additional information; a new short, self-employment page; and a reordering of questions to ensure that taxpayers answer questions most relevant to them first.

From this year, there are changes to the date by which paper self assessment returns must be submitted. While the final date for online returns remains at 31 January, paper returns must now be filed by 31 October.
