Commenting on today's announcement by the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, which proposed that a points based system will help decide the eligibility of migrants seeking to work in the UK, Sally Low, Director of Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, said:

"Considering our education system’s failings and statistics that now show 1.24 million of Britain’s young people are unemployed, we cannot forget that without a steady flow of migrants with the skills and aptitude for work employers would struggle to recruit.

"Any points based migration system must not impact upon the ability for business to recruit the employees that they believe are necessary to help their companies grow and flourish. Migrant workers are an essential part of maintaining a competitive British economy."
