Dear Member,

Proposed Changes to Chamber Governance and Notice of an Extraordinary General Meeting

I am delighted to report that the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce & Industry has been going from strength to strength in recent years. Despite the current global economic turmoil we have established a sound financial basis and our membership continues to grow putting us in an even stronger position to represent the interests of businesses in the county.

In recent months we have enhanced our coverage by establishing member led advisory groups in Stevenage and North Herts; Hertford and Dacorum. In the coming months we will be establishing further groups to drive member interests starting next month with the inaugural meeting of the St Albans Advisory Group. Chamber coverage in Hertfordshire has been further supported by the affiliation of the Watford and Bishops Stortford Chambers who will soon be joined by the Royston Chamber.

Early in the New Year we will also be establishing a Chamber Council made up of representatives drawn from the above groups and affiliated Chambers, it will play a key role in advising, contributing and endorsing Chamber strategy and in identifying key business issues in the county. I anticipate that it will meet twice a year.

These are exciting times for the Hertfordshire Chamber and the movement in general. Earlier this year I was delighted to be elected President of the British Chambers of Commerce and Vice-President of Eurochambre the Europe wide Chamber body. The movement is really going places as witnessed by the key role we are playing in relation to most of the key issues of the day including the economy, the environment and skills and education.

Given the wide reach of the Chamber Council and the Advisory Groups the Board has determined that it would be better placed to support business in the county if it were smaller and had been through a nomination process to ensure that it comprises the an appropriate blend of experience, skills and diversity.

The first step in this process will occur at an Extraordinary General Meeting to be held at 4, Bishops Square Business Park, Hatfield, AL10 9NE on Monday 24th November 2008 when members will be invited to vote on the Special Resolutions which are downloadable by clicking here. I would be delighted if you could attend that meeting or return the attached Form of Proxy.  Please notify Jill Coggins jillcoggins@hertschamber.com if you wish to attend.

Following the EGM we will be holding our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 14th January 2008 (full details to follow in due course) when members will be given the opportunity to elect a new Board.  I strongly believe that these actions will enable us to build on our current strength and put us in a strong position to deal with the challenges of the coming years. If you would like to discuss these proposals with either myself or Tim Hutchings, our Chief Executive, please feel free to contact us the Chamber office at Hatfield.

Yours faithfully,

Neville Reyner CBE DL

Chairman
