Commenting ahead of Gordon Brown’s speech tonight where he is expected to outline new plans for reform of the education system David Frost, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, said:

“We have heard promises before about education being placed at the heart of the Government’s agenda so it is crucial that Gordon Brown follows through with his plans if he becomes Prime Minister.

“The recent record high levels of migration have masked the shocking failure of the education system to provide school leavers equipped with the skills to make it in the modern workplace.  We are in danger of creating a two tier society, with ever growing numbers going straight from school into unemployment and jobs being taken by economic migrants who have a far better work ethic.

“It is encouraging that the Chancellor recognises the challenges ahead and I hope he has the willpower to make the necessary changes.”
