Stevenage Borough Council is very sad to learn of the death of Councillor Reg Smith at the age of 74. Reg Smith had been a member of this Council since 1976, representing the Pin Green ward.  He was Mayor of Stevenage in 1994/5.   He also served on Hertfordshire County Council from 1993 to 2005 and was Chair of the County Council in 1999/2000. 

He was awarded the MBE in 1994 for “services to industrial relations and community relations in Stevenage” and was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Hertfordshire in 1996.   Councillor Sharon Taylor, Leader of Stevenage Borough Council said, “We are all greatly saddened by the news of the death of our friend Reg Smith.  Reg’s contribution to our community in Stevenage was outstanding and quite extraordinary.  He was so widely admired and respected by all who came into contact with him, whatever their background, age or political persuasion.  Reg was also a wonderful ambassador for Stevenage and worked tirelessly for our town and its people which he loved.  His compassion, wisdom, values and friendship will be greatly missed by all of us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Valerie, daughter Kathryn, son Graham and five grandchildren at this sad time.” 

Tim Hutchings, Herts Chamber Chief Executive, said,” The county, and Stevenage in particular, have been extremely lucky to have had a man like Reg working on their behalf he was an extraordinary individual who had time for everybody. His good humour and wise counsel will be missed by all those who knew him”.
