Dacorum Borough Council has been working with the Valuation Office Agency to support local businesses whose properties were damaged by the Buncefield Oil explosion.Depending on the damage sustained, occupiers of properties affected by the blast may be entitled to a reduction in Business Rates. All affected businesses are encouraged to contact the Council or Valuation Office Agency to discuss their individual circumstances.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Andrew Williams said "We've already helped a large number of businesses with their Business Rate enquiries. I would encourage all affected businesses to contact the Council and where help can be given, it will."

An outline of the help that may be available:

Properties that have suffered major structural damage and need to be demolished or rebuilt

* It may be possible to take the property out of rating

* If the property is not in use, exemptions may apply to remove charges

Properties that were evacuated for a short period and have recommenced trading

* A short term exemption may be available to cover Rates for the period when the

property was not in use

Properties that require structural repairs prior to re-use

* Where a structural survey has indicated that repairs are required prior to re-use,

exemptions are likely to apply

Properties that have been partially re-occupied, but part of the building is not in use

pending further repairs

* It may be possible to reduce the rate bill to adjust for the vacant part
