Commenting on the total production and manufacturing output figures for December, published today by the ONS, David Kern, Chief Economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:

 

“The worse than expected production figures confirm that there is no sign as yet that the recession is easing. On the basis of these figures, it is possible that the preliminary GDP estimate for the fourth quarter 2008 may have to be revised down.  

“Given the dire economic condition, it is imperative for the Bank of England and the Treasury to move quickly towards implementing measures aimed at quantitative and credit easing. Without urgent action, there is a danger that business and consumer confidence will weaken even further.”
