Commenting on the Business Investment figures for Q3 2008, published today by the ONS, David Kern, Chief Economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:

"These figures confirm the serious pressures facing UK businesses. As expected, business investment fell last quarter and on an annual basis. The fall was particularly sharp in the construction sector.

“The good news is that the overall fall in business investment was smaller than analysts expected.

"It is important for the Government to focus on supporting business sector cashflow and employment. These figures highlight the need to avoid undermining confidence unnecessarily - there are still pockets of resilience within British business."
