Commenting on the European Commission’s Single Market Strategy, John Longworth, BCC Director General, said:

 

"The EU single market in services presently exists in name only - to the particular detriment of the UK, Europe's services powerhouse. 

 

"The European Commission's new internal market strategy is heavy on measures, many of which appear more cosmetic than substantive. Firms in the UK and across Europe will hope it is not light on real actions that make doing business easier. 

 

"Mr Juncker's plan will be judged on whether a true single market in services and e-commerce emerges. At first glance, it seems less than revolutionary. Business enthusiasm depends entirely on whether these proposals make it easier to trade freely across borders."
