Commenting on the trade figures for January published today by the ONS, David Kern, Chief Economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:
"It is disappointing that exports continue to fall at a faster pace than imports and that the UK’s trade deficit has remained fairly flat in recent months. This is further confirmation that sterling’s competitive exchange rate does not boost our exports in the face of a serious global recession.
“While we oppose protectionism and remain committed to free trade, it is important that adequate export finance remains available to struggling British businesses. The Chancellor’s Budget should address any shortfalls in this area.”
David Kern is the Guest Speaker at our networking lunch on 24th March at Beales Hotel, Hatfield. Book online to join us.
