Hertfordshire-based Barley Print has taken delivery of a state-of-the-art printing press that will increase their print capacity by up to 50%.

The family firm has invested in a Heidelberg XL105-5XL to meet demand, increase capacity and enable the company to take on more commercial work, including more magazines and brochures. It has an increased maximum sheet size of 750 x 1050mm with a print speed up to 18,000 sheets per hour.

The new press has improved print set-up times and paves the way for Barley to move into the printing packaging market. The XL105-5XL is one of a very small number installed in the UK allowing direct print onto boards up to 750 micron.

“It makes commercial sense for us to make this major investment at this time,” says Stuart Bennett, Commercial Director of Barley Print. “The ability to increase our capacity and to be able to expand into the packaging market enables us to diversify our offering and expand our client base.”

One of the first items to roll off the new press was a 2017 calendar created by leading promotional calendar firm Allan+Bertram, showcasing exclusive artwork by emerging UK artist Swarez. Barley Print produce all Allan+Bertram calendars to exacting specifications and in a range of formats.

Swarez said: “I consider it a privilege to have been chosen to work with such a prestigious brand as Allan+Bertram, and I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to present my work in a new and different format by having it featured in these beautiful calendars.

“It’s a wonderful way to showcase my paintings to a wider audience, and to align myself to a company which produces such a high quality product, paying the same close attention to detail as I exact in my own work.”

A new Commercial Print Manager has been appointed at Barley Print and an additional warehouseman employed to deal with their increased business.
