Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards 2017

On this page you'll find all the information you need about 19 individual award categories including our four new categories, Business of the Year - North Herts, Business of the Year - East Herts, Business of the Year - South Herts, Business of the Year - West Herts.

Outstanding Contribution to Business

We are delighted to announce our sponsor for Outstanding Contribution to Business is Tate Recruitment who will be awarding a very special accolade to someone on the Awards Evening chosen by Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce. 

 

Achievement in International Business

This award recognises the strength of Britain’s exporters. Entrants for this award must stand out from the crowd on the International stage and demonstrate that they have generated significant and/or sustained increases in their export activity.

The judges will be looking for:

  • How an organisation has developed a proactive strategy to drive organised growth through international trade.
  • The level of exports when compared to the size and sector of the organisation
  • The barriers that have been overcome e.g. languages, logistics, access to finance. 
  • Innovative approaches in product and market development.

Business of the Year (Small to Medium)

This category will be awarded to the Hertfordshire based company (with a turnover less than £20 million per annum) that can demonstrate high levels of growth and a robust plan for sustainable financial performance.

 The judges will be looking for:

  • What differentiates the company’s products/services from their competitors
  • Managerial and financial performance
  • Potential for growth
  • Evidence of the businesses commitment to staff

Business of the Year (Medium to Large)

This category will be awarded to the Hertfordshire based company (with a turnover more than £20 million per annum) that can demonstrate high levels of growth and a robust plan for sustainable financial performance.

The judges will be looking for:

  • A clear strategy for product and market differentiation
  • Managerial and financial performance
  • Potential for growth
  • Evidence of commitment to staff

Community Champion

This award will recognise the achievements of an individual or organisation that has made a significant impact in their local community defining the values through Volunteering.

The judges will be looking for:

  • Exceptional commitment to an unpaid activity
  • Contribution to other people’s lives or to a community
  • Going above and beyond the call of duty

Entrepreneur of the Year

This award recognises the achievement of an individual who has been instrumental to the success of a business.  Entrants for this award may have exploited an opportunity to develop a successful business from scratch or radically improved the performance of an existing business.

The judges will be looking at:

  • The unique skills or methods that the entrant has brought to a business
  • How the entrant’s vision has driven business growth
  • Business performance over the past three years
  • How the above practices reach to the business's supply chain and local community.

Excellence in Customer Service

This award will recognise a business that has a customer centric vision and has developed a strategy that has measurably improved its customer satisfaction rating. Companies must demonstrate how outstanding customer focus has led to increased competitive advantage and business results.

The judges will be looking for:

  • A clear strategic plan, driving relationship, marketing and growth. 
  • An integrated, customer driven culture, that persuades people, processes and systems to deliver excellence throughout the customer journey. 
  • Evidence of how this strategic vision has impacted financial performance and long term sustainable competitive advantage

Excellence in People Development

This award recognises organisations that demonstrate excellence in the promotion and implementation of a learning and development culture. Entrants for this award must communicate how this culture has contributed to the business achieving outstanding success.

The judges will be looking for:

  • Why learning and development is important to the organisation
  • How training needs and skills requirements are indentified, assessed and supported from apprenticeships to all areas of the workforce. 
  • How a learning orientation has impact on business performance.
  • Investment, commitment and support given to staff
  • Evidence of people strategy integrated with the overall organisation strategy.

Innovation through Technology

This award recognises businesses that have fully exploited the range of technology available to businesses in the 21st century to improve their overall business performance. Entrants for this award must demonstrate how they have used the power of technology, this could include mobile, social, cloud and others, to transform their business.

The judges will be looking for:

  • The range of technology used in the businesses day to day life
  • How innovative technology has improved the businesses processes and increased efficiency
  • The use of technology to improve customer service and engagement
  • How the above practices reach to the businesses supply chain

Made in Herts

This award recognises manufacturers in Hertfordshire that can demonstrate that they have an efficient, innovative and profitable business. Entrants for this award must be a manufacturing company with a strong presence in the UK and/or overseas.

The judges will be looking for:

  • Investment in staff and manufacturing equipment
  • The level of innovation within the organisation
  • Sales performance
  • Growth potential
  • Markets served

Most Promising New Business

This category will be awarded to a business that has been trading for less than three years and can demonstrate outstanding performance and future projections.

The judges will be looking for:

  • Performance and future projections
  • Explanation of the background to the business
  • The markets it operates in
  • The business vision and the research that was undertaken when the business was in development

Social Enterprise of the Year

Celebrating the organisations that exist to address a social or environmental need, reinvesting profit or surplus from trade to achieve its social mission, this award recognises those achieving the greatest impact while demonstrating excellence in all aspects of enterprise – from innovation, staff engagement and customer focus to growth, leadership and financial performance.

  • Pioneering ideas and approaches that can be adapted in other areas of community service
  • Sustainability of the model and potential for lasting improvement

The Environmental Award

This award recognises organisations that employ responsible business practices in relation to the environment, community and people. Entrants for this award must show how they contribute to the well-being of their community and the environment.

The judges will be looking for:

  • A business with a clear mission and policies relating to the environment, the community and people
  • Evidence of a contribution to the overall well-being of the community and the environment.
  • How the business practices sustainable development
  • How the above practices reach to the businesses supply chain

Education in Employment

This award is open to schools, FE colleges, higher education institutions, educational trusts, mentors, coaches or other high achieving individuals who can motivate students to think beyond their immediate experiences to inspiring every student to help them understand where different choices can take them in the future.
 
The judges will be looking for:
  • Sustained and varied contacts with employer networks
  • Development of student motivation to think beyond their immediate experiences
  • Encouragement of a more ambitious range of future education and career options
  • Enthusiasm and passion towards careers and development of future generations

The Tourism Award

This award will recognise a significant contribution to developing and growing Hertfordshire tourism, placing an emphasis on organisations that can demonstrate how they are making a major contribution to the local economy by attracting visitors to venues, tourist attractions or leisure/sporting activities.

Judges will be looking for:

  • Recent and proposed investment
  • Innovation
  • Marketing customer feedback
  • Evidence of proven business success
  • Commitment to customer service

Investment in Young People (IiYP)

This award recognises an employer's effort taken and commitment shown to supporting young people in the workplace. This award entry form comprises of nine questions and, once all the questions have been completed, the entry form has been submitted for the 2017 Awards each participating employer will be eligible to be considered for IiYP (Investors in Young People) Accreditation. Judges will be looking for:

  • A demonstration of commitment to young people within a company policy or business plan
  • Commitment to young people via your organisation's on- and off-line communications
  • A demonstration of work experience or apprenticeships offered in the last two years
  • Evidence of employability skills training development delivered over the same two-year period
