Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards 2016

Achievement in International Business

This award recognises the strength of Britain’s exporters. Entrants for this award must stand out from the crowd on the International stage and demonstrate that they have generated significant and/or sustained increases in their export activity.

The judges will be looking for:

  • How an organisation has developed a proactive strategy to drive organised growth through international trade.
  • The level of exports when compared to the size and sector of the organisation
  • The barriers that have been overcome e.g. languages
  • The degree to which products/services are new and markets non-traditional
  • Innovative approaches to establishing and entering new markets

Business of the Year (Small to Medium)

This award will go to the Hertfordshire based company (with a turnover less than £20 million per annum) that can demonstrate high levels of growth and a robust plan for sustainable financial performance.

The judges will be looking for:

  • What differentiates the company’s products/services from their competitors
  • Managerial and financial performance
  • Potential for growth
  • Evidence of the businesses commitment to staff

This award recognises the achievement of an individual who has been instrumental to the success of a business.  Entrants for this award may have exploited an opportunity to develop a successful business from scratch or radically improved the performance of an existing business.

The judges will be looking at:

  • The unique skills or methods that the entrant has brought to a business
  • How the entrant’s vision has driven business growth
  • Business performance over the past three years
  • How the above practices reach to the business's supply chain

Excellence in Customer Service

This award will recognise a business that has placed the customer at the centre of its operations and strategies and has developed a strategy that has measurably improved its customer satisfaction rating. Companies must demonstrate how outstanding customer focus has led to increased competitive advantage and business results.

The judges will be looking for:

  • A clear strategic plan designed to leave a legacy, after implementation, of a new relationship between the organisation and its customers.
  • Quality of delivery, knowledge, professionalism and staff attitude
  • Emphasis placed on how organisations know what their customers need, how they understand the customer's experience and robust measurement of service satisfaction.
  • Evidence of how this strategic vision has impacted financial performance and long term sustainable competitive advantage

Excellence in People Development

This award recognises organisations that demonstrate excellence in the promotion and implementation of a learning and development culture. Entrants for this award must communicate how this culture has contributed to the business achieving outstanding success.

The judges will be looking for:

  • Why learning and development is important to the organisation
  • How training needs and skills requirements are assessed
  • Investment, commitment and support given to staff
  • Direct benefit gained by both individuals and the organisation
  • A strategic people focused vision to develop a sustainable workforce and deliver improved retention

  • How technology has improved the businesses processes and efficiency
  • The use of technology to improve customer service and engagement
  • How the above practices reach to the businesses supply chain

This award recognises manufacturers in Hertfordshire that can demonstrate that they have an efficient, innovative and profitable business. Entrants for this award must be a manufacturing company with a strong presence in the UK and/or overseas.

  • Investment in staff and manufacturing equipment
  • The level of innovation within the organisation
  • Sales performance
  • Growth potential
  • Markets served

Most Promising New Business

This category is open to businesses that have been trading for less than three years and can demonstrate outstanding performance and future projections.

The judges will be looking for:

Social Enterprise of the Year

The Environmental Award

Education in Employment

This award is open to schools, FE colleges, higher education institutions, educational trusts, mentors, coaches or other high achieving individuals who can motivate students to think beyond their immediate experiences to inspiring every student to help them understand where different choices can take them in the future.

  • Development of student motivation to think beyond their immediate experiences
  • Encouragement of a more ambitious range of future education and career options

The Tourism Award



This award will recognise a significant contribution to developing and growing Hertfordshire tourism, placing an emphasis on organisations that can demonstrate how they are making a major contribution to the local economy by attracting visitors to venues, tourist attractions or leisure/sporting activities.

Judges will be looking for:

  • Recent and proposed investment
  • Innovation
  • Marketing customer feedback
  • Evidence of proven business success
  • Committment to customer service

Investment in Young People (IiYP)

Sponsored by:

This award recognises an employer's effort taken and commitment shown to supporting young people in the workplace. This award entry form comprises of nine questions and, once all the questions have been completed, the entry form has been submitted for the 2016 Awards each participating employer will be eligible to be considered for IiYP (Investors in Young People) Accreditation. Judges will be looking for:

  • A demonstration of commitment to young people within a company policy or business plan
  • Commitment to young people via your organisation's on- and off-line communications
  • A demonstration of work experience or apprenticeships offered in the last two years
  • Evidence of employability skills training development delivered over the same two-year period
